Underground Valletta

In response to strong demand, FAA is considering holding another tour of underground Valletta including the passages between the Auberge d’Italie and the Auberge de Castille, on Saturday 5th December at 1.30pm. However due to heightened security requirements, we are asking those interested in such a tour to send their names and ID/Passport number to admin@faa.org.mt . Subject to approval, we will contact those who have come forward to actually book the tour.

This tour will give FAA members the unique opportunity to tour the rock-hewn World War II tunnel that links the Auberge de Castille to the Auberge d’Italie, part of a wartime system of tunnels built by the British in 1941 which served various purposes during the blitz of Malta. The guided tour will start from the 16th-Century undercroft of the Auberge d’Italie in Merchants’ Street and proceed to the historic vaults of the Auberge de Castille.

Sealed for almost six decades since the 1950s the tunnels’ thick rock walls are etched with masons’ marks and graffiti symbols, dates and masons’ marks, while water trickling through the rock has over the years covered the ceilings with tiny stalactites while a few stalagmites can be seen on the stone floors

Emerging through the 16th century cellars of the Auberge de Castille, the walking tour will proceed to Casa Rocca Piccola in Republic Street where members will be able to visit Casa Rocca’s wartime shelter. As an additional treat, members can book an exclusive FAA tour of Casa Rocca stately chambers and treasures at a specially reduced price of 5 Euros pp. More information on Casa Rocca Piccola is available at FAA’s heritage website: http://www.culturemalta.org/57/53/Casa-Rocca-Piccola

Tea and home-baked cakes will be served at Casa Rocca Piccola after the tour.

Due to the strong demand and limited places, bookings are being taken on a strictly first-come first-served basis and limited to Flimkien għal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) paid-up members, however those who wish to renew their membership of FAA may do so at www.faa.org.mt
